Administration officials disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.
