Amateur players are getting an opportunity to earn A$1m when they compete against world-class athletes - including leading player the Spanish champion - in a single-point showdown prior to the year's first major

Tournament officials of the year's first Grand Slam have announced the Million Dollar One Point Slam, which will match everyday competitors against elite athletes in a knockout tournament at the tournament grounds

This Innovative Tournament Functions

Participants must play 'rock, paper, scissors' to decide who takes the serve or return position, and whoever wins the point will move forward to the next round

The winner of the event will earn approximately half a million pounds

By comparison, players who reached the final four of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won over a million Australian dollars

The American Grand Slam organized a restructured, standalone mixed doubles tournament in the eighth month which motivated top singles players to compete, with the victors receiving $1m

The Australian Open held its inaugural One Point Slam in the current season, but the total purse was a smaller amount and it had limited exposure

One top competitor was the only top-10 player competing, and his run finished when he sent the single service opportunity allowed failing to clear the net in his last eight match

Tournament Specifics

Officials have not said exactly how the event will operate, but it is expected to emulate a comparable structure to the previous version

The top competitors will be allowed to make one service and the amateurs on two occasions - as is the usual procedure in standard play

While it is unclear how the bracket will work, there will be multiple elimination stages and the location will be the Rod Laver Arena rather than the alternative court

The last matches will take place in a evening slot instead of early afternoon

Competitor Requirements

Domestic competitors - or foreign participants who have registered with the national federation - can participate in 'single-point competition' competitions at their neighborhood facilities

The champions of the community events will then go into a draw, with an everyday competitor from every state and territory picked to participate in the 'grand finale' in a evening match on mid-January

There will also be a qualifying draw in the final month which non-professionals, aspiring competitors, well-known figures and athletic celebrities can enter

It starts on Monday, 12 January and the pair of champions will qualify for Wednesday's 'grand finale' with the additional everyday players and elite competitors

"Whether you're an amateur or a pro, the overall victor will receive the prize. Entries will open soon at facilities throughout the nation"

Competition planners stated there were "further celebrities to be unveiled imminently", while the tournament site mentioned "famous personalities" would be involved
