An Emotional Moment as Liam Rosenior Overcomes Barriers

"Rosenior represents an excellent coach who knows the game intimately, and that's the crucial factor.

"But, as the Blues' first African heritage player, I would be lying to claim this moment fails to move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his groundbreaking debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, as their new manager following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within the multi-club ownership group that also controls the London club.

There have been a mere 12 of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – excluding individuals holding interim positions – in England's top flight since it began 34 in the past.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and developed his game not far from here, he understands this area," added Canoville.

"When youngsters observe someone like Liam in charge of their club, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a household that fights for what's right… it is impactful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, it is a massive step for the club, for London, for every young person dreaming big.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and let the man do his work."

What Exactly Does the Data Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became the Blues' manager in 1996 and became the top flight's inaugural African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince became the first black English manager in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current Premier League boss of colour.

The lack of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game corresponds with a lack of diversity at executive level.

According to a BFP 2023 study, 43% of top-flight players come from African or Caribbean heritage.

However, analysis from the equality organization revealed only 3.2% of board and senior leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic communities.

Regarding first-team coaching positions, based on figures provided by 11 clubs, the percentage is 2%.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of him being announced as the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we hope to see more of that," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists a wealth of ability present within black and underrepresented communities... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to show what they can do. We need to persist in striving to dismantle those barriers down."

Furthermore, the new appointee will become the fourth permanent English managers currently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's other big five leagues regarding national representation.

16 out of twenty first division managers in Serie A are from Italy, 11 in La Liga in Spain, 12 of the 18 in Germany while Ten of the 18 are French.

Current Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every young English managers from an academy background will be, to some degree regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It's really motivating for young English coaches in the system to witness someone get that job with that profile and everyone hopes he does really well."

'Let's not forget – he's there due to ability'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., played for clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a brief spell at the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered in combating discrimination within the sport and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he pursued a path in management. He began writing articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he acknowledged the under-representation among managers. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill and said roles must be awarded on merit.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: how significant lack of diversity leads to a failure to understand of players from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" or "emotional", but said he could relate to the Dutch player of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to follow him with a move from France to Chelsea in July.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted he was "embarrassed" upon hearing a coach utter a homophobic slur. He vowed his support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and authored a public message to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

Rosenior has since made his name as a manager – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their collaboration at Derby County.

Rosenior said his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal at Chelsea.

The Blues had the top flight's first African heritage manager in Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
