Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
The original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he plans to personally create this new flavor within an individual series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
This latest development intensifies the continuing tension among the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have asserted that Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding the product's name and additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Current Changes
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that originally created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated how he plans to create other ice cream flavors that address concerns that the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company recently, after decades of involvement, mentioning worries that its independence had been undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
