Hardline Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Elected as Chile Next President.
After a definitive final ballot, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Triumph
After over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having earlier been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Campaign Focused On Security and Immigration
Recognized for his staunch Catholic views and praise for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly focused on promises to address growing violence and drastically restrict migration.
He frequently cited migrants, notably the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the campaign, he gave an final demand for them to leave before the new term begins or face deportation.
His proposals included Trump-inspired measures such as erecting detention centers, barriers, security fences, and bolstering the military presence on the northern frontier.
Amid a Regional Wave
Several observers see Kast's victory as fitting into a larger rightward wave in the region, following this year's political results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other experts also frame it as a continuation of the regular rotation of power between left-wing and right-wing governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Clear Mandate
In spite of his sweeping popular vote triumph, Kast is not expected to command an overall majority in parliament, not in the lower house or the Senate, even when all rightwing parties are combined together.
This political situation may complicate his agenda, including a pledge to slash public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to provided concrete steps.
"We have numerous aspects about what a Kast administration will be that we don't know because he has not said his methods for implement them," noted a political science professor.
The expert added, "On the economy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies common for the right. However the area with far less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his central theme during the campaign."
