A plant's root structures are adapted for temperate conditions, and icy water can shock or hurt them. The surrounding conditions has a significant role in the technique's effectiveness: in a heated space, the ice will thaw rapidly, giving scant advantage, but in a colder room it may remain too long, lowering the temperature of the roots and slowing absorption. Always use ice cubes are frozen from fresh, clean water and never force them in contact with the base or the root crown.
