Israelis observe two-year remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks proceed
Citizens have assembled across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"The aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed official memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to review the provisions of the proposal.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the negotiations revealed that an evening round of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative stated the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to close the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for assistance provision
- After-conflict governance of the region
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No location appears as home anymore and until each abducted person are released no one will feel safe."
"After we see everyone home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We need do every compromise required for the hostages to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to finish in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of the gathering, grieving people came together to pay their respects.
From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli shelling continued.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side district, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"When the dusk comes, the dread arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.
"My family are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my youngest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The medical facility in the urban area said it had taken in the corpses of several people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the south region of that area reported another two victims had been brought there. One of them was died by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the southern area, medics said.
