The sport of boxing has been a real slump this year, with few major fights and far less engaging contests than typical. The possibility of a important and captivating heavyweight battle between Joseph Parker and Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena brings a measure of relief to the struggling sport. Wardley, previously a white-collar fighter, who only took up boxing when he was 20, had no amateur experience and has perpetually battled questions regarding his technical limitations. But he is equally near to a world title challenge.

“This is the biggest bout, currently, in the heavyweight class. Both these fighters have stepped up when neither fighter was required to take this bout. Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have already ordered the champion to fight him, but he was injured. Joseph is eager to compete regardless.

“Fabio is also in an excellent situation and he could have just waited for his time. He said ‘No.’ He wanted to fight – and against Parker because it offers him an opportunity to skip the line.”

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is do or die. I am not considering defeat. I respect my opponent and his accomplishments and the way he's trained for this contest. But I am on a higher plane and I am planning to demonstrate it on fight night.”

The Perspective of Wardley

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the pair of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my career and the biggest fight of my life. But every time I step up I excel under pressure. Saturday will be the same. The gap between Parker's level and my perceived standing has been a frequent topic in my boxing life.

“He has been going around the block for a considerable period, with a lot of fights on his record. Certainly not is he an aged fighter but he has been in the boxing world for a long time and had some heavy fights. I've also endured brutal fights and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a lot more of those fights than I have.”

The Ultimate Prediction

But the suspicion remains that Parker should prove too seasoned, and too technically proficient, for Wardley. He is favored to secure a grueling encounter with the conviction that he is the leading contender for the champion Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a comfortable distance.
