Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for United

The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further business:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
