New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday near the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
