Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains The Club's Support After PSV Eindhoven Defeat
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's natural for questions to be asked about his position following another heavy defeat versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool endured their ninth defeat in twelve matches, representing the team's poorest streak after being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing night at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I'm fine, I've received a lot of backing from management,” Slot stated.
“It would be great to turn it around and get a victory obviously but when you're working as a coach and struggling then it's expected that people question you.”
He noted, “I am OK with my situation. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a tough spot but it's necessary that we improved our results.”
Discussions with Club Management
When asked to provide details on his conversations with the team officials, Slot revealed:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive to the team and to me and those talks happen but they don’t call me constantly of the day to say they trust me.”
He further stated, “During our regular discussions I perceive the belief. However I've not talked to them since this defeat yet so let’s see.”
Persistent Problems and Squad Response
Slot expressed regret over familiar failings from his team in their Champions League loss, namely wasted chances and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was blunter in his evaluation of the club’s predicament.
“I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I'm telling that to everybody,” the midfielder remarked.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I’m past getting mad inside. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the words.”
He added, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the club I love. I'm a supporter, and I've watched this club all my life.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Liverpool team going through a phase such as this with outcomes this poor.”
Jones finished, “But we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And until that badge is removed, we will always battle.”
“Our aim is to help the side back to the top, demonstrate to all again what this club is about and why it's known as the best team in the world.”
“But right now, we’re in the shit and we have to turn it around.”
