We're Getting an Upcoming Release in the Greatest Star Wars Series Ever Made, Helmed by a Mass Effect Veteran.

The galaxy far, far away fans are spoiled for titles when it comes to excellent interactive experiences featuring the iconic energy blades, but the universe created by George Lucas is not just a playground for combat. Few series have grasped this as well as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was developed in the classic computer role-playing game style that made developers like Obsidian and BioWare legendary. Now, after a number of fits and starts, The Game Awards has unveiled that players will soon be able to dive into a thematic heir to the series. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

The Major Announcement

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is described as "a fresh single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Casey Hudson, previously at BioWare and the creative lead of the original KOTOR, is leading it at Arcanaut Studios.

“When we created the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a ultimate Star Wars experience — designing an adventure that consisted of all the things we dreamed of doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson explained. “Now, 25 years after we first conceived that game, our aspirations are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic represents an chance to delve into a contemporary vision of a quintessential Star Wars experience, using advanced technology and game design, and an brand-new story written specifically to fulfill the fusion of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the core of KOTOR.”

An Unexpected Turn

The reveal is somewhat of a shock, given that 2022 saw a recent try at an Old Republic game get shelved. However, industry whispers had suggested that a reimagining of KotOR, as well as one of its sequel, had been in production as recently as March 2025.

Here is the official description for the new title:

Developed by Arcanaut Studios in conjunction with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.

KOTOR's Enduring Impact

The venerated role-playing games, which have been made available to platforms like the Switch, are renowned for their narrative-focused, player-influenced, and RPG-stat-heavy approach to Star Wars. The games were influential enough that they inadvertently codified how people imagine the Old Republic age as a whole, still today. The games dared to question many tenets of Jedi lore that are often considered absolute, like whether the faction and its understanding of the Force are right. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, veered in a considerably bleaker direction by inviting players to consider if the world might not be wiser without the Jedi at all. Both games are highly regarded by fans decades after their release, but the follow-up in particular is considered by some as one of the greatest pieces of Star Wars media in existence.

A Fresh Start

And now, a few years after seeing a vibe-heavy trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, the community is at last being granted another game in the comparable style. Given the demand for deep games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a modern approach on Knights of the Old Republic that's executed properly has the possibility to be a massive hit.
